Yorkie Poo

The Yorkie Poo is a mix of a purebred Yorkshire Terrier and a pure-bred Poodle (in most cases the Miniature Poodle or Toy Poodle), or more rarely the offspring of 2 Yorkie/Poodle crosses. Also called a Yoodle, Yorkie Poo, or Yorkapoo, this hybrid dog was bred for the first time in the U.S. The Yorkshire Terrier was bred for catching rats in the clothing mills of late 19th century England. The Poodle also possesses significant hunting instincts. The idea behind crossing the Poodle and the Yorkie is to combine the intelligence, trainability, as well as reduced shedding coat of the Poodle breed with the bright, bold temperament of the Yorkshire Terrier and to tone down the stubbornness and independence of the Yorkie. Crosses, or hybrids, also aim to eliminate the health issues associated with deeply inbred thoroughbred while offering the best of both breeds involved in the mix.

The Yorkie Poo isn’t eligible for registration with pure-bred registries like the American Kennel Club, but it could be registered as, ‘Yorkiepoo’ with the American Canine Hybrid Club. The Yorkie Poo isn’t considered a purebred since it doesn’t, ‘breed true.’ This means that it does not display a consistent set of traits. Like other, ‘designer breeds’, this dog breed has seen a recent surge in popularity. At his best, the Yorkipoo is friendly, playful, highly intelligent, and cute as all get out. You will find him to be a warm companion, people oriented, and a trainable lapdog. The small stature of the breed makes him best suited to a home with adults or older children.

The Yorkie Poo is a small dog — most are just 7 to 12 inches (18 to 30 cm) in height at the withers, weighing in at around 3 to 14 pounds (2 to 7 kg). The breed can have the small, flat-head of the Yorkshire Terrier or the long and narrow snout of the Poodle. Yorkie Poos can have straight, ‘Poodle-tails’ or the high-carried tail of the Yorkie.

Because the Yorkie Poo is a somewhat new crossbreed, the coat may vary tremendously. It always tends to be long, straight coat, of silky and wavy and very soft hair like the Yorkshire Terrier but it could be a fine frizzy, curly, wavy or poker straight like the Poodle. The coat can be in a wide range of colors including brown, apricot, red and white, black, silver, gray, black and tan, black and white and tri-colored. Yorkie Poos are non-shedding and hypo-allergenic breed, making it a great dog for allergy sufferers.

Character and Temperament
