Chorkie is a hybrid pup that represents the Chihuahua and the Yorkshire Terrier breed. This designer hybrid dog first appeared in the early nineties. Yorkshire Terrier is a confident and clever small dog with a wide range of personalities. While Chihuahua is a playful, affectionate dog. Chorkie brings the combination of traits of both the breeds. It is a small-sized dog with a lively attitude and cute feel. It is an ideal pet for single owners or families who have older children. If properly supervised and socialised, they make a great family dog.

Appearance

Chorkie are quite small in size thanks to the characteristics of Chihuahua. The looks of both the Chihuahua and Yorkshire Terriers are very distinctive and the appearance of Chorkie will depend on which traits they inherit from which parent. Generally, Chorkie are small sized with delicate bone structure. They have pointed ears and bright alert faces. Chorkie tend to be found in black, silver or tan colors. The coat can be in a range of colors, right from white to fawn and various others. The texture of the coat also varies quite a bit, ranging from very short and fine to long amd wavy.

Temperament

Like all mixed breed dogs, the temperament of Chorkie is a unique mix of its parent’s behavior. Both the parents are self-assured and confident breeds and Chorkie are no exception. They are highly energetic and playful like their parents. Chorkie do require a great deal of exercise and play to keep them engaged. They can develop into quite stubborn dogs if not trained properly from puppyhood. They may look small but if they are not trained properly, they can be quite naughty.

Their playful nature makes them great family dogs and their tiny size makes them quite cuddly too. However, they need to be trained properly from childhood for proper etiquettes or else they can be difficult dog to handle.

Health

Both the parent breeds of this cross bred are delicate dogs, but they can live pretty long lives when proper care is taken. With good balanced food, proper care and regular veterinary check-ups, Chorkie may maintain good health and long life. The average life span of Chorkie is around twelve to fifteen years.

Chorkies are susceptible to health conditions that affect both parent breeds. They are susceptible to skin problems, eye infections or eye injuries, heart problems and slipping patellas.
