Carkie

History

The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest breeds of terrier and was traditionally a working dog that originates in the Scottish Highlands. It is known for being a spirited animal that is friendly to strangers but is very alert and will let their owners know if guests are coming. Yorkshire Terriers (or “Yorkies”) are knowing for being loving but feisty animals. Both of these terrier breeds are known for being energetic. The result of cross breeding the Cairn Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier is a small but loyal, fun, energetic and friendly dog that will make a great addition to any family.

Physical Description

Carkies are small dogs and only grow up to 15 inches in height and weigh between 10 to 15 pounds. They look like a typical terrier, with pointy ears, long, straight coats and come in a variety of colors (cream/white, grey, golden, brown/black).

Temperament

Carkies are energetic and playful dogs that are extremely social animals and as a result are very child friendly. Even though they are small, Carkies are known for being very loyal and protective of their owners and so can make great watch dogs. Their size and temperament makes them perfect pets for apartment living, although they also appreciate living in larger houses with big backyards.

Health

Carkies are generally healthy dogs, with no series health issues having been identified with this breed. However, these dogs can gain weight easily and so they must be exercised to ensure they do not become overweight.

Carkies have long coats which require constant maintenance to stop matting. Their coat can be brushed up to twice a day to remove excess fur, and their coats should be kept trimmed in a medium to long length.
