ABCNews.com reports that when 5-year-old chocolate lab, Molly, became lethargic and out of breath last month, her owners rushed her to the vet. Based on the symptoms presented, the vets believe that Molly suffered a heart attack. Further tests concluded that Molly suffers from a complete blockage of electrical charge to her heart.Their solution? Install a pacemaker.
Alicia and Allen Brown, a nurse and paramedic, who have five dogs, rely on Molly and one other as Search and Rescue dogs. If the Brown's lost Molly, it could take up to two years to train a new dog, or up to $20,000 to buy a new one. After years of providing faithful service to the authorities in Saginaw, Michigan, and being a loyal family member, the Browns knew they had to do whatever they could to get Molly healthy again.
The Browns were overwhelmed with offers to help with the costs of travel and surgery, with Medtronic providing the pacemaker and a businessman from Kansas offering up to $2,000 anonymously. Patrice Graham, another member of the k-9 search and rescue team is credited as spearheading the effort to drum up support to help Molly and the Browns.
The surgery was a success and Molly was scheduled to return home on 5/23 and is restricted to spending her time in her crate while she recovers.
Is it a coincidence that her full name is "The Unsinkable" Molly Brown?
