Proposed Measure to Strip Animal Shelters & Animal Control Agencies of Their Ability to Microchip Animals (proposed by the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine)
How many times has Fido scooted out the front door when you opened it just a wee bit? Or how about when you let Fido out in the back yard for some exercise and come back to find Fido is gone and there's a huge hole under the fence? Or you find yourself in the midst of a hurricane and Fido is lost in the confusion? Fido is out there, somewhere, on his own and you have no way to find him...you don't know where to look. You spend days posting "missing" posters all over the neighborhood and pray that someone calls. Then, one day, someone does call: it's the local animal shelter and they've found Fido and he was identified by the microchip you had implanted during the last visit to the vet. What a relief!
But what happens to the other Fido's that wind up in the shelter who haven't had a microchip implanted?
The ASPCA has reported that the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine is considering a measure that would strip animal shelters of their ability to microchip animals in their care. While an explanation for the purpose or reason for considering this measure, the ASPCA is urging Florida residents to take action by submitting a customizable form email to the members of the board for their review and consideration at their meeting March 18th.
Considering that euthanasia of lost pets is the leading cause of death and microchipping is a vital tool in reuniting animals with their families, won't you take a moment to join their letter writing campaign?
