The American Kennel Club recently announced the winners of the seventh AKC Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE). The awards are designed to commemorate loyal, hard-working dogs that have made significant contributions to their community an is given annually to dogs in each of the following five categories: Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Therapy, Service and Exemplary Companion Dog.

"All of our ACE nominees are truly deserving of recognition and choosing just one for each category is the hardest thing to do," said Ronald Rella, AKC Director of Project Administration and member of the judging panel. American football team The Seattle Seahawks are helping dogs at local animal shelters and rescues by donating their old towels. “Towels for Shelters” is a campaign organized by Deena Cornish, owner of Uneek Dogs.

The Washington-based company sells organic Uneek Treats, which are high-protein grain biscuits that can be eaten by both dogs and humans. It donates $0.25 from each box sold to rescue operations for needy animals.

"Towels are in constant need at animal shelters and rescue organizations," says Cornish. "Most people are not aware that this is an ongoing need. I'm so grateful to the Seahawks for their generosity in participating in this campaign and I know the shelters will be, too."

A longtime animal advocate and Seahawks employee contacted Uneek about donating the old, used towels that would normally be thrown out.

It’s safe to say, my dog has me well trained. My “best friend” since she was six weeks old, my precious pup is now a fourteen year old peke-a-poo, missing teeth, missing vision, and missing manners. She growls at me whenever she wants MY dinner, she awakes me at 3:00 a.m. so I can give her a drink from MY glass and free her from having to walk the ten steps to her water bowl, and she bites me whenever I accidentally touch her as she sleeps in our bed (90 percent of the bed, she has decided, belongs to her ten pound frame). Yes, it’s fair to say, when it comes to my dog, I am nothing if not obedient.
