By Yvonne Darling The seventh annual Stride for Strays fundraiser will take place in Tampa on Oct. 13 at Al Lopez Park from 9 a.m. to noon. Dogs and dog lovers are invited to attend the community event, which raises money to help reduce the number of area dogs euthanized each year.
According to the nonprofit Animal Coalition of Tampa (ACT) which organizes the walk, nearly 30,000 companion animals were euthanized in 2006 in Hillsborough County alone. With nearly 1.2 million residents, the county is home to Raymond James Stadium--slated to host the 2009 NFL Super Bowl, Busch Gardens and Tampa, currently the third most populous city in Florida.

By Jeff Cuckson There is something particularly beautiful and sweet about the relationship between kids and Westies. Growing up with a canine companion can teach children that responsible care giving is well worth the effort, for the love and loyalty they receive in return. A faithful Westie can instill in a child a sense of trust and security that will carry over into human relationship. Westies make great playmates, protectors and pillows and they are always available to listen and sympathize when parents, teachers, friends and siblings just do not understand.

By Sharon Stevens In all likelihood, the new puppy in the house will be the cutest thing you've laid eyes on until he chews up your favorite shoe. Unfortunately, a puppy chewing on something is a natural part of its growing up as they start to develop those powerful jaws that nature intended as well as its instinct to explore and experiment with its surroundings. With that in mind, there is such a thing as good chewing and bad chewing.

By Susie Jones-Barroni One of the biggest fears for any dog owner as of late is that their four-legged friend will become the victim of tainted dog food. In recent months many brands of dog food have been recalled and sadly many pets have lost their lives. There is no way of knowing for certain whether the dog food brand you choose is safe. More and more pet owners are seeing not only the value, but the virtue, in deciding to make their own dog food. It's easy and on top of keeping your pet healthier for longer, it also will save you money.

Canine Parvovirus--A Serious Contagious Disease in Dogs By Jonni Good Canine parvovirus, sometimes known simply as 'parvo,' is a serious contagious disease caused by a virus. This illness is spread when dogs come into contact with the feces of infected animals. Dog parks, highway rest stops and popular walking trails in cities are areas where dog feces are often found, and where an unvaccinated dog may pick up the virus. Humans may also unknowingly bring the virus home on the bottom of their shoes or on their car tires, so dogs who never go outside the yard can still be infected with this disease. The virus can live in the soil or other contaminated surfaces for as long as six months.
