Dogs aren’t called man’s best friend for nothing. They’ve been our companions for hundreds of years, and their intelligence and empathy towards others is what makes them so lovable. It’s no wonder that they’re now being used as a form of therapy.
Unfortunately, dogs have a tendency to wander off. Nine times of ten, they turn up again unscathed with their tail between their legs – usually after being found by a kindly member of the public. That’s why identity tags are so important. When 12-year-old Louis went missing, his humans were understandably distraught. He’s an old dog, and because of this, it was easy for them to fear the worst. What they didn’t know, however, was that he had disappeared to go on a heroic mission… After being gone for an entire afternoon, Louis’ family were delighted when their beloved dog eventually returned. He belongs to a woman named Marolyn Diver, who lives with her family in New Zealand. “He looked so exhausted and had basically just collapsed,” Marolyn said. Aside from Louis’ exhaustion, there was one other clue about what he had gotten up to – a note which had been attached to his collar. Louis had obviously encountered some people, and they had a message they wanted to get back to his owners. “We were concerned someone might have hurt him,” Marolyn revealed. “But after reading the note I felt complete and utter relief, then my heart melted.” The note read, “Louis is the hero of the day. He led me to Maddy in distress stuck under a branch pile. Cheers, Rob.” Who is Maddy? I hear you ask. Maddy is another dog who belongs to a farmer called Rob. He lives around a mile away from Louis’ family. Just like Louis, Maddy, pictured below, had disappeared that day. But she was eventually found again when Rob came home and also Louis on his farm. Louis apparently acted in such a way that Rob knew he wanted to lead him somewhere. At first, he wasn’t sure how to react to Louis, but decided to follow the dog on the off chance that he would lead him to something important – and Louis certainly did that, saving Maddy from being trapped under a pile of branches! “Rob said he was 100% sure that Louis knew what he was doing, and getting Rob to Maddy was his one pure focus,” Marolyn said. “Once he found her, Louis helped Rob dig her out, pulling at branches, digging out the ground. Rob said the second she was free both dogs ran to a nearby pond and jumped into it exhausted and drinking water.” “He then gave Louis a huge handful of dog biscuits as a thank you. He knew Louis might get in trouble for being late home, so he thought he would write a small note to explain his absence.” Louis wasn’t just a much-loved family pet, he was also a rescue dog (and a rescuer!). So if you’re thinking about getting a canine companion yourself, why not consider homing a hero dog of the future? They’ll repay you in ways you could never imagine. “[His heroic act] changed the way I look at him. And I think my parents feel the same way,” Marolyn said. “I am so proud of him.” But Louis isn’t the only hero dog in the world. Check out this incredible pooch who helped save an 11-year-old girl’s life! It just goes to show that there are some exceptionally good doggos out there.
